The Puerto Rico Cuenta Hackathon promotes the design, development and prototyping of new technologies that connect the communities of Puerto Rico using data, API's and CitySDK of the US Census Bureau. A principal purpose of the census is to collect data that is then compiled into agregate statistiscs avalilable to the public. These satistics allow for insight available at census.gov Developers can use for example data available from APIs on Economic Census, County Business Patterns, Decennial Census, Population Estimates, and the Planning Database.
Another example is the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates which represent a wide variety of social, economic, housing, and demographic characteristics updated annually The ACS Information Guide [English | Spanish] is a helpful resource for learning more about the survey.
A streamlined starting point begins with the US CitySDK. This toolbox for civic innovators has been optimized into a user-friendly javascript Software Development Kit for US Census Bureau data, including simple integrations to facilitate mash-up of other open datasets.
The data sets are rich of valuable information that can be applied to Puerto Rico to address issues within economic, social, business, art, emergency management Education and many other fields. We would like to see creativity during your exploration of resources and data discovery, and inspired teamwork to connect communities with technology created by you and your team. We encourage all projects to consider local Puerto Rico geographies, at all levels seeking valuable tie ins. Feel free to use any programming language.
